The Pauper: Chapter 5: Advantages and Disadvantages
For the Pauper, time is of the essence, and setbacks may take years to resolve.
Knowing, therefore, that it’s virtually impossible to truly secure himself against the whims of powerful systems and their coordinators, against violence from ordinary private citizens, and against the vicissitudes of economic upheaval, the pauper ought to consider his conduct.
As has been seen time and time again, in coping with the miseries of life, it's easy resort to heavy drinking, promiscuity, doom spending, social isolation, gambling, and illicit economic activities, which are disadvantageous.
Or…
One may be inclined toward the nobler aspects of coping, such as persistence in a major goal, strengthening best-interest relationships, surrounding one’s self with a support system, or devising stress management strategies, all of which are advantageous.
With vices, the pauper must be careful. They are a sweet syrup in the mouth, and a poisonous herb in the stomach. Once a habit of vice overtakes him, he has willingly trapped himself. And the enterprises of vice (gambling, drugs, alcohol, sex) which have been forged to exploit his lack of discipline, will not soon depart.
As history has shown, his habits will keep him in economic straits or at least hinder his progression, strain his relationships, and manifest the dark aspects of his human condition.
Think of the Temperance Movement (1820s-30s) for example, which came about as a result of the marriages and legacies wasted due to rampant alcoholism, and the problems that came with it. Which eventually led to the ill-advised Prohibition era.

A penny spent for vice’s sake is a penny forfeited to the devil.
The pauper can find himself in a cycle of frustration and defeatism. If he is fortunate, friends and family, even a compassionate stranger, will intervene to alter this self-destructive course. Otherwise, his path will continue unabated, where tragedy and/or the harsh justice system await him down the road.
There are many sorrows to navigate in this vain life. And for the pauper, the options to effectively engage them are small to non-existent. He must decide whether his story is one of defeat, or triumph.
Men are apt to do that thing which is easy to do: lay down and die. With reason in service to their passions, they convince themselves that the world “owes” them something.
It is not so.
Yet with this attitude it is easy to throw Gatsby-like pity parties.
Ghettos across the US, mainly in the Foundational Black American (FBA) communities, are a prime example.
For clarity, FBA means one can trace ancestry back to the American system of slavery, specifically to enslaved people who were part of the US Chattel slavery system.
A ghetto is nothing more than a socio-economic quarantine of an undesirable population, a subtle and sadistic experiment in human control by the upper echelons of elitist society.
In regards to FBAs, the cities to consider are Milwaukee, St. Louis, Chicago, New York, Baltimore, and Los Angeles, among many.
In these parts, men, women and children are overcome with anger, despair, self-hatred, and frustration. Because of the abject poverty of their condition and surroundings, many lack the nutrition necessary for early cognitive development, affecting their intellectual capabilities as they age. Their territories are flooded with institutions of vice. A lack of adequate jobs and skills training have consigned them to specific territorial zones which are largely divested of economic and educational opportunities.
They are often harassed by law enforcement. And many of them will not venture further than a mile from their neighborhood in their entire childhood. In a sense they live in open-air prisons.
The children, captivated by the false machismo of gangster rap culture, are deluded long into their adulthood. They adopt certain dress codes which incite subtle scorn. They magnify, at least in word, a way of life that portrays them, or those who influence them, as anything other than the paupers that they are.

Many produce children out of wedlock, indulge in violence, and cycle in and out of prison systems due both to distorted justice systems and poor behavior. I acknowledge in fact that many of these circumstances are largely systemic. But the responses, however, though predictable, are not.
For if you complain to Destiny regarding your fortune, she will ask you the same question she asks all else: “what shall you do now?”
And one finds in general, in these places, a people who are demoralized.
The truth is that it is highly difficult, but entirely possible, to work and also to effectively organize against the systems that bind you economically, and to escape. But it can be a long and arduous road. Yet the fight is worth it, if it’s for your freedom.
But yet while they have succumbed to the vices which keep them trapped or hinder their efforts, their young men and women feign toughness.
In addition, they indulge in lofty dreams, and a culture has been cultivated which puts its trust in the art and entertainment professions as avenues of escape from the miseries of poverty. Things such as professional sports, acting, comedy and show business in general; elements of celebrity.
Herein lies another inconvenient truth: that this culture of lofty dreams has rendered “Black America” to the de facto status of a National Circus. For the only time in which wider society seems to fully embrace certain parts of her that they otherwise wouldn't, is when they are being entertained by her.
The pauper must strive to combat melancholy and defeatism.
He must avoid cultures of excessive indulgence which either hinder his progression, or exacerbate his poor circumstance. Because in lacking sufficient resources and influence, many things become potential emergencies for him. For even when he has nothing, he still possesses his human dignity, and he may find aid in places where he did not expect.
God may even have mercy on him.
Advantageous conduct will aid his efforts to progress.
He should be sober and vigilant; so that when opportunities arise, he may see them and grasp them. Time is of the essence, and setbacks may take years to resolve. He must be in the business of setting goals, and if he knows not how to carry them about, he should at least exercise great caution in conferring with another pauper. He should rather confer with those who possess expertise in the particular subject matter. And such will be men in a better socio-economic position than he, or well on their way.
