Seeing then that he should be diligent regarding his affairs, a pauper will also confront many obstacles to his goals and intentions. These obstacles are presented by systems, his environment, and his own shortcomings.
In all this he must remember to be as the cockroach. Cockroaches don’t go away, they must be crushed. The point is that unless fortune totally closes the door, he should consider pressing, demonstrating resilience and persistence when and where there is still a reasonable chance.
Only if he desires to.
Humans are creatures of calculation; we invest in those things which we perceive will grant us the best return on our efforts; and we will only go so far as what we are willing to sacrifice.
God, though he only permits those that are right with him into his presence, is impartial with fortune to all. Therefore, refreshing rain and rejuvenating sun come for the harvests of both the righteous and the wicked.
The pauper would then do well to understand, that in persistence he may not necessarily find what he desires, but may still yet receive that which is better than what he currently possesses.
And in his persistence, it should be noted that many will come, sowing doubt masquerading as practical advice. As said in a previous chapter, there is that friend that keeps you close, not because he loves you, but envies your prospective rise.
In conclusion, persistence is only productive when the goal is not delusional. You must be honest with yourself and where you stand in regards to your abilities, resources at your disposal, and the opportunities presented.
If you find yourself not having attained to the ideal goal, but still in an improved situation with better options and leverage than before, you have not failed. Though it is not as you would prefer, it is success nonetheless.
From that, take a measure of comfort.
